Abstract

Sterbenskunst is a philosophy of death – and therefore a philosophy of life. Without death, the decisive questions of human existence would never arise: What truly endures? What remains? What does it mean to let go? And might there be something in dying beyond mere annihilation?

Drawing on Western philosophy, Buddhism, Daoism, and Christian and Islamic mysticism, this book explores death as limit, mirror, and possibility. It reflects on aging, fear, conscience, meaning and emptiness, the self and its dissolution into a greater whole. At the same time, it asks whether and how human beings can prepare themselves for death while still alive – and how one might live a life capable of withstanding the awareness of its own finitude.
